Y'all better bow down

Here is John Terry, the scumbag who somehow captains England, the man recently accused of racism and the man proven of shagging one of his best friend's girlfriends ( I know it's always the woman's fault, but I'm still holding it against him) finally getting a bit of sense and therefore a small ounce of my respect, for bowing down and paying homage to the Dutch master Robin Van Persie, an artist who should be held in the same regard as Van Gogh.

" I am not worthy, master"

Wayne Rooney kills two birds with one stone.

Wayne Rooney has a head for football.

Literally.

Reports from Old Trafford indicate the club have been taking advantage of Wayne Rooney's recent hair transplant, with small 5 a-side training exercise's taking place on the astroturf style surface.

It is believed that Wayne Rooney, the ultimate team player, had held discussions with Sir Alex Ferguson about training ground development, prior to the decision to actually get the small training pitch transplanted onto his head.
Rooney turns up for training
When questioned on the matter, Rooney expressed that he wasn't too worried about taking a few knocks, stating he might get Nemanja Vidic to slidetackle through his eyebrow,  " to make me look cool".

John McGovern's Pasta Sauce

For those who know me and know I am prone to making many silly jokes, let me say the title of this post is not a euphemism in any way. You never know who may be reading. Therefore it's important to try not to be obscene or inappropriate, and to at least project a cloak of class.
For as a man much wiser than myself once observed, "in some company it's perfectly all right to prick your finger, but very bad form to finger your prick"

Cookery shows have always fascinated me. I've come across many chefs in my time, and most ( with some exceptions) are contemptuous and despicable. Even the ones on TV. Gordon Ramsey, what an arse. Jamie Oliver, effusive to the point that it is grating. And I only like Nigella for two reasons. The same two reasons that has many men tuning in while their wives cook them the dinner. The one on the left and the one on the right. The only TV chef I remember liking was the late Keith Floyd. His shows were often filmed on location so that he could actually be cooking in old Greek ruins or maybe on a yacht in the middle of the mediterranean, or even in a Rugby stadium. He was an eccentric and flamboyant man and often cooked with a glass of wine in hand. A glass of any sort of alcohol in fact.

The process of food preparation just fascinates me. To the point that ( I am hesitant as to whether to write this down or not) I would spend a whole morning watching cookery programs, with no real motive to cook anything I see. What attracts me is the aesthetic of seeing red and yellow peppers sizzling in oil in a pot. Or a seasoned sea bass on top of a hot pan, or a plate of tomatoes that have been roasted in basil and thyme and lemon juice. When I see that, I find the most subtle hint of an aroma seems to emanate from the television and fill my nostrils. Sounds like bollocks I know. But it's true. I imagine many people share this feeling.

I don't cook very often, and when I do, it's usually very basic. However I believe yesterday I cooked one of the best things I have ever cooked. I had some of it for lunch today as well. Even nicer today than it was yesterday. It was a spaghetti sauce.

At the risk of sounding like an annoying TV chef, I'll explain this recipe. Please indulge me :)

Slices of pepperoni
Half a Red Pepper
Half a Green Pepper
Half an Orange Pepper
Half an Onion
Two tins of Tomatoes
Tomato Puree
Paprika
Oregano
Reggae Reggae Sauce ( the secret ingredient)

Throw the chopped up onions and peppers into a pot of oil and let them sizzle for 2 minutes

Chop up the pepperoni and sprinkle some paprika on top. Throw them into the pot too.

Drizzle some reggae reggae sauce on top. I found this in the cupboard while I was looking for paprika and thought sure why not? They say cooking is all about creativity, and after briefly tasting the reggae reggae sauce, I decided it was going into the mix.

Next is to throw in two tins of chopped tomatoes. Mash them all up and let them come to the boil, stirring often. Throw in some oregano and a little more paprika.

The final touch is to stir in some more Reggae Reggae Sauce. Let it all boil up.

What you get is a tomato based sauce which has chunky bits of peppers and a nice hint of hot 'n' spice from the Reggae reggae sauce, and a subtle sweetness from the paprika.

Throw onto spaghetti, get a bit of black pepper and grated parmesan, and wash down with a nice glass of something nice.

If you like spaghetti and you're in the mood for cooking, try this out and I don't think you'll be disappointed.

I've called it John McGovern's Pasta Sauce. That's what the pros do. :D

Tattoo, to do or not to do?

I have often thought over the decision of whether to get a tattoo or not. It's so easy to say " Deadly, I'm getting a tattoo, exactly like that one, it's cool" But when ya actually think about it, is it?

A tattoo is a materialistic thing I think for almost anyone I know that has one. It's a fashionable accessory. I don't need a tattoo to remind me of what my name is ( sounds really stupid but I actually know people who have their own names tattooed on themselves), I don't need a tattoo to prove I'm a Bowie fan or to show I am a big fan of the Arsenal, or My parents or gf's names written on me in Chinese symbols.
What I want is a tattoo that has a spiritual meaning, or intellectual or emotional substance. Something I can always relate to and transcends beyond the materialistic. Not something crass, or ignorant, or something that in many years time when I'm a grandparent I will look at in the mirror and think " What...the..fuck"?

Speaking of that, Hopefully I won't need my own name tattooed onto me when I'm a grandparent

I want something subtle. Ink that as a symbol, an engraving, speaks of something I believe in deeply.

It's something I'm still gonna continue thinking about.

2010, It was a very good year

Well it's been a while and so here it is. My first post of 2011. I think I'll do something of a sparse "Best of 2010" for this edition. So without further a do...

2010 was a very good year. Finished college in Ireland, entered college in England. To the lovely area of Preston. Don't get me wrong, there are nice people and the university is spectacular. In fact I'm typing this from within the UCLAN library, a state of the art building with state of the art equipment. Preston itself is far from state of the art.
Unless the art in question was some sort of form of shit modern art. Yes! A new movement perhaps called derelictism, or decayism, pioneered by some pretentious twat through the creation of such areas as Preston.
There are nice areas in (de)Preston, I have no doubt. I just haven't been to them yet. Except maybe Sunny Side Up, which has the best BLT's I ever ate in my life.

College graduation was indeed a highlight for me. 2 years of hard work certainly paying off. Some great times were had with some great friends in Colaiste Dhulaigh.
Film 2 Hard as Nails Cunts, you know what I mean.

I started listening to some great music in 2010. Favourite albums of the year for me would be

Whispering Pines: Live at the Getaway, a live album from the late Richard Manuel.
Aja, Steely Dan
The Suburbs, Arcade Fire
The Dreaming, Kate Bush
Plastic Beach, Gorillaz

The best Film of 2010.
For me I am choosing two films that were released far before 2010, but ones I only viewed at the tail end of the last year. Dances With Wolves, one of the most sumptuous and visually appealing films I have ever seen. The fact that it's Costner's directorial debut is also very admirable and inspiring. Moments in that film genuinely had me in awe, on the verge of a wide array of emotions. What a shame that a great nation was created at the expense of the Native American.

A film which also had me in awe, for totally different reasons I should add, was American Movie: The Making of Northwestern. It's a documentary about aspiring Milwaukee filmmaker Mark Borchardt. The best films are about struggle, and Borchardt's journey in this film is one of serious and real struggle. I can identify somewhat with Borchardt's plight and feel sympathy for the guy, but I could also not help but laugh at his mental ideas and crazy vernacular and surrounding followers. It's a great documentary, which in effect, is about people. If you haven't already realised it, realise it now. People are weird. It's cool.

Best Sessions of 2010
Well I'm of the belief that for a session to be truly memorable, it should be one that you actually can't remember. At least in full, anyway! That being said, I'm going to have to go for a recent session in Swan's Pub in Curragha. Guinness, Beer, Whiskey tasting, followed pointlessly by Sambuca, kinda rendering the cool and classy past time of whiskey tasting obsolete. Needless to say, and without naming names, people did pass out and people did shed blood. What can I say, twas deadly craic!

Best Day of 2010
 Umm...March 27th

2011 will bring another graduation, a lot of surprises ( winning the lotto would be great, God) and The Taxi Driver workout!!
Over and Out!
